1664 Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant surrendered New Amsterdam to the British navy, ending Holland's colonial role in the New World. The departure of the Dutch changed its name to New York in honor of the Duke of York.
1812 The Russians are defeated by Napoleon's forces at the Battle of Bordino
1921 The first beauty pageant begins at Keith's Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey. 26-year-old Margaret Gorman of Washington, DC was the first winner.
