1812  Napoleon Bonaparte's massive army invades Moscow, they in turn, set fire to the city
1814  American lawyer Francis Scott Key composes the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, after having witnessed the massive British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812.  It becomes the US National Anthem in 1931.
1847  During the Mexican-American war, US forces enter Mexico City and raise the American flag over the Hall of Montezuma.
1948  Groundbreaking ceremonites for the United Nations takes place in Manhattan, New York.
1975  The first Catholic saint born in America, Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, is canonized by Pope John XXIII at the Vatican in Rome
1982  Princess Grace of Monaco dies in a car crash.  The daughter of a Philadelphia contractor, became a film star and then married Prince Rainier of Monaco and had 3 children.
