1787  The US Constitution was completed in Philadelphia
1862  Union forces repulse a Confederate invasion of Maryland at the Battle of Antietam
1972  The M*A*S*H television series premieres on CBS as a sitcom about the US Korean Conflict.
1983  Vanesa Williams of New Jersey becomes the first Afro-American to be crowned Miss America.  This was later revoked due to her photo being shown in Penthouse Magazine wearing little more than handcuffs.  Nonetheless, she went on to become a successful singer and actress
