1784  The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser weres published in Philadelphia, becoming America's 1st newspaper.
1897  Virginia O'Hanlon, age 8, wrote a letter to The New York Sun newspaper asking if there was a Santa Claus, Editor Frank Church wrote the response "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist"
1946  The Annual Cannes Film Festival in France finally debuts after delays with World War II.  
1981  After 191 years, Sandra Day O'Conner becomes the first woman to sit on the bench of the US Supreme Court
1989  Hurricane Hugo rips through South Carolina causing billions of dollars of damage
